Ways to Get Into the Exercise Groove

Ways to Get Into the Exercise Groove

You sign up with your local gym. Go religiously for a couple of weeks. Then, slowly but surely, you lose enthusiasm. Before you know it, a few months have passed, and you haven’t entered the gym once. Sound familiar?

If so, don’t worry. This happens to a lot of people – sometimes it’s really hard to stay motivated! The good news is, there are ways you can get your exercise groove on… here are a few top tips.

Sticking to Exercise – long-term commitment

  • Have a good reason for doing it. It’s important to identify your ‘why’. What are the benefits of exercise? Why does it matter to you? Is it because you want to have the stamina to play football with the kids in the park? Do you want to enter a half-marathon at the end of the year? Give yourself a clear reason and focus on it whenever you feel tempted to quit,
  • Tell everyone your intentions. When you share your exercise goals with the world, you’re much more likely to keep to them. So, don’t be afraid to announce it. Tell your friends on social media. Let your parents know. Even better, ask them to hold you accountable, to minimise your chances of giving up.
  • Be realistic. You don’t have to be perfect with your exercise regime. Sometimes you’ll have days where you just don’t feel in the right frame of mind; which is fine! If you’re not enjoying a particular form of exercise, try something else for a change. For example, a high-paced salsa class is just as beneficial as a swim, and it might just lift you out of your exercise rut.
  • Get the kit. There’s something about investing in proper exercise clothing that means you have to use it – otherwise it feels like it’s wasted, sitting in the back of your wardrobe! You don’t have to spend a fortune. For example, eBay is a great place to search for barely-used fitness gear, and it’ll cost you a fraction of the price.
  • Don’t give it up at the first hurdle. For many people, weight-loss is their primary motivation. When the weight doesn’t immediately shift, despondency often sets in, which causes people to quit. Remember, weight loss isn’t everything. It’s a meaningless number on the scale. Muscle is denser than fat, which might mean you might weigh the same (or even more!) while actually looking slimmer.
  • Make it pleasurable. Do whatever you can to make sure your exercise is as fun as possible. For example, if you choose to go running, listen to a podcast or some music; it’s a great way to make the minutes fly by! Spray some invigorating perfume on too, like Coco Mademoiselle. It’s ideal for lifting the mood.
  • Do it with friends. Nothing beats having an exercise buddy or two. Whether it’s going to a Jazzercise session with your best mate or swimming with some likeminded locals, it really helps to have other people there. Not only will they keep you company; they’ll also help you to stay motivated.
